Why you need a will

(and what happens if you don’t have one)

Without a will, the law decides everything.

Who inherits your house. Who gets your savings. Who raises your children. The government has a one-size-fits-all formula and it probably doesn’t match what you’d want.

If you are not married to your partner

They inherit nothing. Everything goes to your children, or your parents if you don't have kids.

If you have young children

Courts decide who raises them. Not you.

If you own property:

Your family might have to sell it to split the proceeds according to legal rules.

If you have specific wishes:

They are ignored. The law doesn't care who you wanted to help or what you wanted to protect.

A will changes this. You are in control. Your wishes are legally binding. Your family doesn’t have to guess or argue about what you wanted.

And getting one sorted is easier than you think.

How it Works

01.

Answer questions at your pace

We will ask about your assets, who you want to inherit, and who should look after your children (if relevant). Save and return as many times as you need.

02.

We check everything

A qualified legal professional reviews your will to make sure it's legally sound and reflects what you actually want.

03.

Sign and store it properly

We will explain exactly how to sign your will (it's specific), and where to keep it so it can be found when needed.

Store your will securely with us.

What we can help with

Wills

Create a legally sound will that clearly sets out your wishes for your property, money, and possessions.

You need this if you:

  • Own property or have savings over £10,000
  • Have children and need to name guardians
  • Want to protect your partner
  • Have specific wishes about your estate

Lasting Power of Attorney

Choose someone you trust to make decisions about your health, care, or finances if you ever can’t make them yourself. This isn’t just for elderly people. Accidents happen. Illnesses happen. An LPA means your partner, family member, or friend can manage things for you, without going to court.

Two types available:

  • Health & Welfare LPA
  • Property & Financial Affairs LPA

Most people need both.

Trusts

For situations where a standard will isn’t enough: protecting assets from care home fees, ring-fencing inheritance, or reducing inheritance tax liability.

We will tell you if you need this. Many people don’t. But if you do, we will explain exactly how a trust works and whether it’s right for your situation.

Why choose Versatile Wills

Every will is prepared by a qualified professional

Your will is drafted and completed by experienced legal specialists, not generated by software and checked afterwards. We handle all the legal drafting, ensuring proper wording, valid witnesses, and complete clauses.

We explain things in actual English

No "hereinafter" or "testamentary disposition." We explain your options in plain English, then draft your will with the proper legal wording required to make it valid.

Expert guidance on what's right for you

We will help you understand which services protect your family best. Sometimes that's a simple will. Sometimes it's trusts and LPAs too. We'll explain the difference and let you decide.

Fully regulated and compliant

All our specialists are qualified legal professionals. We are registered with the Society of Will Writers and maintain full professional indemnity insurance.

When should I set up a Lasting Power of Attorney?

Before you need it. Once you have lost mental capacity, it’s too late. LPAs are not just for dementia. They cover strokes, serious accidents, comas, mental health crises, and progressive illnesses.

Without an LPA, your family has to apply to the Court of Protection. That takes 6-12 months and costs £3,000+. With an LPA in place, your chosen person can act immediately.

Worth knowing: It takes 8-12 weeks for an LPA to be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. Don’t leave this until you think you might need it.
